My Perfect Weekend...

I would love to visit Mount Vernon, George Washington's home, this weekend with my family! it's a lovely place to visit, with so much to do and see! As far as accommodations, I would stay in Washington, DC, perhaps at Club Quarters, one of our favorite hotels, and itGÇÖs fairly reasonable, too. Then I would take the metro to Alexandria where we would hop on a bus to Mount Vernon. Cabs are possible, also, but itGÇÖs a lot cheaper and just as easy to take the bus, and the bus stops right in front of the estate so you won't feel confused upon arrival. Mount Vernon is only 16 miles south of DC, so itGÇÖs really not far to travel.

Upon arrival, we would probably start at the new The Donald W. Reynolds Museum and Education Center and the Ford Orientation Center. The Mount Vernon Ladies' Association has created a wonderful program about the property, and itGÇÖs a great way to get acquainted with the place before venturing out.

I would also be interested in taking the "National Treasure 2: Book of Secrets" movie tour on the property, which even goes down into the basement! I would love to see the behind the scenes spots mentioned in the movies in person, and the story behind it all.

Plan on spending at least an hour, if not more, strolling around the property and down to the Potomac. We enjoy the house itself, along with all the other buildings on the property, including the barn, slave quarters, and where the wheat is threshed. I felt "awe" when I visited President WashingtonGÇÖs actual grave on the propertyGÇöhe is actually there, the man weGÇÖve all learned about since early childhood!

If you have time, the restaurant there is great! I heartily recommend the peanut soup! When I saw it on the menu, I knew it was something I had to try, as it made me feel like a real time traveler going back to President WashingtonGÇÖs day. Lots of great menu options! The gift shop is large and well-stocked, including bottles of George's whiskey made at the Grist Mill there!

Then, when you've seen and done it all, hop back on the bus right in front of the estate and head back to DC.
